The period in U.S. history that I most like to read about is the 1930s and ’40s. It is the time just before and during World War II. I believe that was the time our country really came of age. It was a frightening time when the world was faced with enemies on three sides. It could have been the end of our noble experiment in democracy. I think that was when our potential became a reality. President Franklin D. Roosevelt told us that we could face what looked like overwhelming foes, the Axis powers, and be victorious…and we were. Gen. George Patton told us that courage is holding on a minute longer…and we did it.
If words like these from two human leaders can cause us to achieve such amazing feats, just imagine what the Word of God can do for us. In the 7th century, when parts of the Bible were first translated into English, common people first began to have access to God’s Word without having to have an intermediary. By the time of the Reformation, the Bible was not only to be read and studied but was also an inspiration for action. It showed people that God’s Word is a living thing, active and alive and able to invigorate each new generation.
The Letter to the Hebrews says that God’s Word penetrates like a two-edged sword. In other words it cuts both ways. It cuts away what is unnecessary and slices down to the meat of the matter. It carves away the excess that weighs us down and slashes obstacles that keep our true goodness from showing forth. Powerful words have always called out the best in us. When God’s Word adds His strength to our best, we can’t help but be victorious.
“The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit…it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” –Hebrews 4:12
